Providing your Labrador puppy with the right nutrition during the early stages of life is critical for long-term health, especially when it comes to bones and joints. Labradors are active and large-breed dogs, so their diet should support healthy growth and musculoskeletal development.

1. Protein — The Foundation for Growth

Young Labradors need high-quality protein to develop muscles and tissues. Look for foods where meat (chicken, fish, lamb) is listed as the first ingredient. Protein should make up around 25–30% of the total diet.

2. Calcium and Phosphorus: Balance is Key

Proper bone formation requires an optimal calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Too much or too little of these minerals can lead to bone development issues, especially in large breeds.

Recommended calcium-to-phosphorus ratio: 1:1 to 2:1

Calcium: 1.2–1.8% of dry matter

Phosphorus: 1.0–1.6% of dry matter

3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Joints

Omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA, help reduce inflammation and support joint health. Sources include fish oil, flaxseed oil, and fatty fish.

4. Supplements for Joint Support

For additional joint support, consider supplements such as:

NuJoint PlusĀ®: helps maintain joint and cartilage health.

NuVet Plus Wafers: supports the immune system, skin and coat health, and overall vitality.

5. Moderate Exercise

Regular but moderate exercise, such as walks and swimming, helps strengthen muscles and maintain joint health.

Start early to ensure your Labrador puppy grows healthy, strong, and happy!
